Pokemon Go Helping Capture Wanted Suspects

Posted: Updated:

SMITHFIELD, Va. (AP) - A Virginia police department is using the wildly popular "Pokemon Go" smartphone game to try to catch people with outstanding warrants.

The Virginian-Pilot reports (http://bit.ly/2ad927W) Smithfield police wrote on their Facebook page last week that a few "random citizens" will have the opportunity to try to capture Ditto, a rare, smiling blob of a Pokemon hanging out in the station's processing room.

So far, eight people have been invited to the station for the capture. All had outstanding warrants in the town as of July 12.

Police spokesman Sgt. Bryan Miller says the post was created to engage with the community and to get some leads on people wanted for charges ranging from trespassing to grand larceny.

Police say the list will be updated as long as Ditto hangs around.
