ASSATEAGUE ISLAND, Md.- A spokeswoman with the National Parks Service says a wild pony with the Maryland herd was hit by a car on Assateague Island Friday afternoon.

It happened on Bayberry Drive, the main road along the island,  around 3:30 p.m. The National Parks Service tells us a car hit a 16-year-old stallion, named Tunkan Hoksila. They say because of his injuries, the pony had to be euthanized.

An NPS spokeswoman tells us the stallion spent most of his time along the south part of the island, near the Pine Tree Campsite, and would often be spotted up in the developed area.

Park Rangers are looking into what happened, and have not released any information about the driver of the car.

This sad event on Assateague comes the same day as the wild ponies with the Virginia herd swam back to the island after the Chincoteague Pony Swim and Auction this week.
