LAUREL, Del. - Delaware State Police are investigating a fatal crash that shut down part of Route 13 early Saturday morning.

Police said the accident happened around 1:40 a.m. when 32-year-old Michael Gonzalez of California was driving Southbound on Route 13 just North of Boyce Rd. at what appeared to be a high rate of speed.

According to police, 42-year-old Douglas Baker was also driving Southbound just ahead of Gonzalez when Gonzalez hit his car from behind.

Police said upon impact, Baker's car rotated violently in a clockwise direction while spinning down a grass embankment and overturning into thick roadside foliage. Police added the car then caught on fire, trapping Baker inside.

Baker was pronounced dead at the scene.

Baker's wife, 44-year-old Tracey Baker suffered substantial burns.

Gonzalez was treated for non-life threatening injuries.

Police charged Gonzalez with vehicular homicide, driving under the influence, no insurance, driving without a license and inattentive driving. He was committed to Sussex Correctional Institution on $40,000 cash bond.
