NJ Woman Hit by Boat in Isle of Wight Bay; Captain Charged

WORCESTER COUNTY, Md. - A woman from New Jersey is seriously hurt after falling from and getting struck by a boat in the Isle of Wight Bay.

According to Candy Thomson of the Maryland Natural Resources Police, 26-year-old Natalya Potsurko was posing on the bow of the boat for a photo Saturday night when the boat struck a wake and she fell overboard.

Thomson said the woman was not wearing a life jacket, and the severe injuries she sustained to her face and leg from the boat's propeller made her unable to swim.

Another passenger dove in to rescue her, and Potsurko was initially taken to the Peninsula Regional Medical Center, before being transferred to Penn Hospital for specialized treatment, Thomson said.

It is unclear who was driving the boat at the time of the accident, but 25-year-old Nicholas James Gilbert of Philadelphia had rented the boat and is therefore considered the captain, according to Thomson. He was charged with negligent operation, which carries a minimum fine of $320.
