LEWES, Del. - George HP Smith Park playground in Lewes will be closed for a week for construction after a safety inspection revealed several flaws.

The playground was initially built in 1993 and is made mostly of wood.

The inspection was conducted on May 10, 2016, however maintenance workers said they do check on the quality of the playground everyday.

Starting Wednesday, Aug. 3 and ending Wednesday, Aug. 10, the playground will be closed as workers tear down one section and rebuild the other. Some of the parts from the torn down section will be used to fix the other part.

Mary Lou Jackson, who lives near the park, said the rehabilitation is necessary.

"There is aging on the playground," she said. "Our granddaughter likes to shimmy up poles and she cannot do it here because of slivers, so it does need some rehabbing."

Problems found on the inspection include but are not limited to metal parts rusting, wood not being treated and therefore warping, protruding nails and bolts which could lead to potential snags and bridges posing head entrapment issues.

Jim "Bear" McLean does maintenance for the city and was working on tearing down the first section early Wednesday morning.

"We're gonna take care of the mulch problem, which costs a lot of money," he said. "Trying to compact it a little smaller for the kids so they don't get all tore {sic} up with the wood and trip over the roots."

These repairs are just to tide the town over until a completely new playground is built.

"It ain't {sic} dangerous but it needs to be looked at," McLean said. "So we're trying to take care of it before it gets worse."

The city's Parks and Recreation Commission is working on a concept and looking for funding to build the new playground throughout the next year.
