OCEAN CITY, Md. -- Ocean City Police Department called in the Maryland State Police Homicide Unit to investigate a death of a suspect while in police custody.

Police say Jerry Weston, 37, of Greenwood, DE was taken into custody along with two others on drug charges, after their car was pulled over early Sunday morning. OCPD says they found 1,500 small bags of heroin and additional narcotics during the traffic stop. While processing Weston at the Ocean City Police Department, the suspect was reported exhibiting signs of physical distress. Police say he was then taken to Atlantic General Hospital for emergency care. After being admitted to the hospital, police learned the suspect ingested cocaine.

Weston was pronounced dead at the hospital shortly after arriving at Atlantic General Hospital around 3:30 a.m. Police say Weston's body was taken to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner's in Baltimore. Authorities say an autopsy is scheduled for Monday to determine the cause and manner of death.

Maryland State Police investigators are interviewing police and medical personnel involved with the arrest, transport and medical treatment of Weston in an ongoing investigation.
