MILTON, Del.- Authorities are searching for the cause of an early Wednesday fire that left two Milton businesses in ruins.

Milton police said that at around 2 a.m., officers responded to a burglary alarm that went off at the Milton Diner and adjacent United Pharmacy on the 200 block of Broadkill Road (Route 16).

Officers said when they arrived on the scene they observed heavy smoke but no flames were visible from the structure. They requested the Milton Fire Department be dispatched to the scene. Police said that about 15 minutes later, heavy fire was visible through the roof of the structure and mutual aid fire companies from Ellendale, MIlford, Millsboro, Indian River, Georgetown and Slaughter Beach responded to assist.

It took more than two hours to get the fire under control, according to the Milton Fire Department.

Firefighters said the fire started in the diner, then caught the adjacent pharmacy on fire.

No injuries were reported. Both businesses were unoccupied at the time of the fire, according to the Delaware State Fire Marshal's Office, which is still investigating the origin and cause of the blaze.

Damage to the building and equipment is listed at approximately $500,000, the State Fire Marshal's Office said.

Milton police said that after the fire, officers requested the assistance of the Delaware Office of Controlled Substance to ensure all controlled substances and other medications were removed from United Pharmacy and escorted to a secure location.

Just the day before, fire ruined another Sussex County business, Ed's Chicken and Crabs in Dewey Beach. Authorities say a drunk driver crashed her car into the restaurant, which caught on fire and destroyed the business.
