Business Owners Oppose Rehoboth Beach Ban on Craft Breweries

Posted: Updated:

REHOBOTH BEACH, Del. (AP) - Business owners in Rehoboth Beach are opposing a plan by city officials to revise city laws that define brewpubs and craft breweries.

Businesses say the effort needlessly stifles a growing part of the beach area's economy.

The law would keep craft breweries out of town. Such companies make and sell beer, but don't run restaurants alongside the brewing rooms. Brewpubs, which combine beer-making and restaurants, would be subject to special rules beyond those applying to city restaurants.

Brewpub owners such as Jeff Hamer say the law would treat businesses that serve alcohol unfairly.

Rehoboth Mayor Sam Cooper says that the city doesn't have room for manufacturing facilities.
