RICHMOND, Va. (AP)- Virginia Republicans say Democratic vice presidential candidate Tim Kaine displayed poor judgment during his final hours as governor when he pushed for a convicted killer to be returned to Germany.

On a conference call with reporters Thursday, state GOP lawmakers said Kaine improperly gave special treatment to Jens Soering, who has maintained his innocence in the 1985 killing of his ex-girlfriend's parents. Kaine asked federal officials to transfer the German diplomat's son to a prison in the man's home country under a deal that would have made Soering eligible for release in two years.

Kaine's successor, Gov. Bob McDonnell, revoked the request soon after being inaugurated in 2010.

Kaine defended his decision, saying Germany should have to pay for Soering's imprisonment. He faced similar GOP-led critiques during his successful Senate campaign in 2012.
