Dorchester County Man Charged With Arson

DORCHESTER CO., Md. - A 57-year-old man from Madison has been arrested and charged with arson following a fire in his neighbor's shed.

Deputy State Fire Marshals report the incident happened in the early morning hours of March 18 and involved a 12' x 12' wood framed shed that was set on fire.  The property belonged to Edward James at 1124 Taylors Island Road in Madison. 

Approximately ten firefighters responded from the Madison Volunteer Fire Department and controlled the blaze within 15 minutes.  The subsequent investigation revealed the neighbor, Christopher Henry Whittle, 57,  was responsible for setting the shed on fire.  Damage estimates to the structure and contents was valued at $2,500.

Whittle was taken into custody on Friday and transported to the Dorchester County Detention Center where he remains on a $50,000 bond.  He was charged with 2nd Degree Arson, 2nd Degree Malicious Burning and Malicious Destruction of Property.
