SALISBURY, Md. – Despite financial struggles, the Richard Hazel Youth Center in Salisbury will remain open and provide programs to area youth through the winter.

In May, The Salvation Army of the Lower Eastern Shore reported a roughly $150,000 annual shortfall. The inability to raise enough funding put the fate of the center, located by North Lake Park, in jeopardy.

Willie Downing, Youth Club Director at the Richard Hazel Center, says community support has been instrumental.

“They decided how important this building was to the community and what we've done,” said Downing, “So, that's the been the most welcome part and the most exciting part that we've accomplished."

Maj. Vic Tidman says, despite the significant support, fund raising will continue to be a very important part of keeping the center and its’ programs running.

"We haven't solved the problem,” noted Tidman. “I don't want to indicate that we don't still need to raise the funds that we need in order to continue to serve the folks here but we are making progress and we're going to continue to strive to make sure that everything works out and we continue to function here."

In the midst of the financial turmoil, there had been talk of the possibility the center would be taken over by Wicomico County. Tidman says the Salvation Army has about 85 years left on its’ lease and it has no plans to ever have the building be anything other than a Salvation Army run facility.
