SCI Inmate Dies After Fall; DOJ Officials Suspect Suicide

Posted: Updated:

DOVER, Del. (AP/WBOC)- Delaware Department of Corrections officials say a man being held at a Sussex County prison on drunken driving charges has died.

Authorities say 54-year-old Lloyd Lindner of Bridgeville arrived at the Sussex Correctional Institution in Georgetown shortly after 3 a.m. Saturday. An ambulance was called shortly after 6:30 p.m. that evening after he fell from a second floor railing. He was taken to Beebe Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Officials say Delaware State Police are investigating the death as an apparent suicide.

DOC spokeswoman Jayme Gravell said Lindner stood on top of a railing before falling head first to the floor below.

It's unclear how Lindner was able to get on top of the railing, but Gravell said prison staff asked him to get down before he fell.

DOC officials say Lindner had been held in custody at the same prison facility twice before, in 2014 and 2015.
