Wicomico Bridge Replacements To Impact Drivers

Posted: Updated:

WICOMICO COUNTY, Md. - Two old wooden bridges in Wicomico County are being replaced, which could impact drivers for the next several weeks.

One is a bridge over Windsor Creek on Nanticoke Road in Bivalve. It has about 2,000 cars a day drive over it.

It is 85 years old, and the State Highway Administration says it has reached the end of its useful life.

Local businessman Jim Wade is conflicted about the bridge being replaced.  On the one hand, Wade thinks replacing the bridge is necessary, given its age.

"I drive a tractor over it and when you are going over it lot on something you can see a lot, you can tell there are problems with it," said Wade.

His conflict is that he owns two businesses on either side of the bridge. One is a gas station and repair shop, which he says should be fine. The other is a market which relies, in part, on drive-up traffic for business.

"I'm hoping that is doesn't have a whole lot, but it may impact us because we won't have the true traffic coming through here that we have now," he said.

Also nearby is the West Side Fire Station, which uses Nanticoke Road for fire and ambulance response. Volunteer firefighters aren't too concerned about slower response times, especially since the busy summer recreation season has ended.

"It is going to be a minimal impact for responding to emergencies, or coming back transporting to the hospital. It might add about 30 seconds to a minute, but that's about it," said Grady Romblad, West Side Volunteer Firefighter.

The other bridge being replaced is already closed. The 19-foot bridge on Delmar Road crosses Mockingbird Creek near Mardela Springs. it was built in 1931 and repaired in the 70's. About 3,000 cars cross it every day.

The bridge on Nanticoke Road is expected to be closed next week, and SHA says both bridges should be closed for about ten weeks.

Second Wave of Debris, Pollution Enter Bay After Conowingo Dam Opens Gates

Rain and flooding decimated neighborhoods and towns in Northern Pennsylvania earlier this week. Now, all that water flowing down the Susquehanna River has reached the Conowingo Dam, rising fast and forcing engineers to open up six dam gates on Wednesday. Exelon, the dam's owner, expects to open more gates as water levels peak on Thursday.
