ADELPHI, Md. (AP)- The University System of Maryland's Board of Regents has decided to change the way the system handles compensation decisions for high-ranking school officials.

System spokesman Mike Lurie says the board voted unanimously Friday to no longer give bonuses to the system's chancellor or campus presidents. Future compensation agreements will also now be publicly announced after closed meetings.

Lurie says existing compensation packages that include bonuses will be reviewed and renegotiated.

The changes came about after criticism of a $75,000 bonus and $30,000 raise were added to Chancellor Robert Caret's $600,000 base salary during a closed meeting of the Board of Regents in June. Some lawmakers questioned the bonus in light of rising tuition for students.

Board Chairman James Brady says the board wants to maintain a positive relationship with lawmakers.
