Thieves Steal Dozens of Batteries from Sussex County Bus Companies

SUSSEX COUNTY, Del. – Delaware State Police are investigating multiple thefts after roughly 40 batteries were stolen from more than a dozen school buses at a bus company in Seaford and one in Laurel.

According to police, the thefts happened sometime between the evening of Tuesday Sept. 13 and the morning of Wednesday Sept. 14.

James E. Lambden, owner of Lambden Bus Services in Seaford, says 11 buses and roughly 30 batteries were stolen.

“We got up this morning at 6 o’clock to start our buses.” Lambden said. “None of them would start.”

In Laurel, bus company Mary Bryan Inc. found itself in the same predicament. Roughly a dozen batteries were stolen from several buses in his bus yard. Both companies say they had to scramble to get students to school.

"We have a service to provide to them to get them to and from school,” said Wade Bryan, Vice President of Mary Bryan Inc. “ They didn't just rob us today they actually potentially put a damper on students that needed to be in school to get their educations.”

All students affected in Seaford and Laurel eventually made it to school but were late getting there.

According to the bus companies, more than $5,000 worth of batteries were stolen in all. The buses have all had replacement batteries installed. Delaware State Police says it does not have any suspects and asks anyone with information to contact Crime Stoppers at 1-800-TIP-3333.
