DOVER, Del. - An elderly Millsboro man was killed Thursday evening in a head-on crash involving a Delaware State Police trooper, state police said late Thursday night.

The crash happened just before 6 p.m. on Route 1 southbound at exit 98, the North Little Creek Road exit.

According to Master Corporal Gary Fournier with the Delaware State Police, a preliminary investigation indicates a 77-year-old Millsboro man was driving a 2010 Chevrolet Aveo northbound in the southbound lanes of SR1, and a 22-year-old trooper assigned to Trooper 3 in Camden, was driving his fully marked patrol car southbound in the left lane of SR1 when the two vehicles collided head-on.

The elderly man was pronounced dead at the scene. Fournier said the man was not wearing a seat belt. A dog, who was in the car with the man, was also killed.

Fournier said the trooper, a 22-year-old man, was airlifted by Delaware State Police Aviation to Christiana Medical Center where, as of Thursday night, was admitted with non-life-threatening injuries, Fournier said.

The State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit is continuing their investigation into this incident.  Alcohol does not appear to be a contributing factor, Fournier said.

SR1 southbound was closed at Exit 104 for four hours while the crash was investigated and cleared.
