SALISBURY, Md. (AP)- Salisbury officials are considering banning toys and BB guns that look like real firearms in order to decrease the likelihood of police shootings.

City Councilman Muir Boda says that he proposed the legislation after he was approached by residents concerned about the possibility of officers mistaking fake guns with the real things. That confusion was at the heart of the 2014 shooting of 12-year-old Tamir Rice in Cleveland.

City Council President Jack Heath says the proposed law will likely be up for discussion Oct. 3.

A bill introduced earlier this year in the Maryland General Assembly would have outlawed imitation firearms statewide unless they had visible markings on them, but the bill never made it out of the Judicial Proceedings Committee.
