Two ECI Corrections Officers Detained

Posted: Updated:

SALISBURY, Md.- Most of the correctional officers who were arrested in the massive alleged bribery scheme at Eastern Correctional Institution in Westover, Maryland have been released from custody, according to a spokesperson for the U.S. Department of Justice.

Eighteen corrections officers were indicted Wednesday as part of the alleged smuggling scheme at the prison, which prosecutors say involved guards taking bribes to smuggle contraband into the prison.

Fourteen of the CO's who were arrested Wednesday have been released pending trial, after making an initial court appearance.

Two of the CO's had left corrections before the indictments were handed down. One had joined the military, the other was a truck driver. They have since been arrested.

There are two who will remain in custody through trial. Rachelle Hankerson of Salisbury, Maryland, and Stephen Wise of Pocomoke, Maryland are accused of ordering inmates to stab other inmates.

In all, 80 people were indicted, including 35 inmates, and 27 outside "facilitators."

The alleged racketeering scheme involved money, cellphones, tobacco, drugs, and sex.
