Updated: Police ID Laurel Man Killed in Smyrna Crash

SMYRNA, Del.- Delaware State Police have released the name of a man killed in a motor vehicle crash near Smyrna.

Troopers say 64-year-old John Torlish of Laurel was hit and killed in the crash, which happened around 12:30 p.m. Monday on southbound SR1 at Paddock Road.

Investigators say 66-year-old James Leggett of Pennsylvania was driving a tractor and flatbed trailer southbound on Route 1. Police said that for unknown reasons, the trailer drifted onto the shoulder, hitting Torlish. Troopers said Torlish had just left his truck on the side of the road and was walking toward the front of it when he was hit.

Police said the tractor-trailer then hit the left side of the truck before stopping, and the victim landed in the right-hand southbound lane. Torlish died at the scene. Leggett, who police said was properly restrained at the time of the crash, was not injured.

This crash remains under investigation by the Delaware State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit. Neither speed nor alcohol use appear to be a factor in the crash, according to police. 

The southbound lanes of  SR1 was closed for approximately two hours as the crash was investigated and cleared.
