Delaware Attorney General Eyes Heroin, Opioid Abuse Efforts

Posted: Updated:

DOVER, Del. (AP)- Attorney General Matt Denn says more work is needed to tackle heroin addiction and prescription painkiller abuse in Delaware.

Denn on Wednesday said the state's prescription drug monitoring program needs to be tightened to help officials identify prescribing patterns that should be referred to police or medical licensing authorities.

He also said his office will work with state insurance regulators and Medicaid officials to ensure that people get insurance coverage for proper substance abuse treatment, including expensive residential treatment if needed.

Denn also said medical providers need to be made aware of drug interactions that may increase the risk of overdose, and to be notified when their patients overdose on painkillers or are diagnosed with substance abuse problems.

Denn spoke after the inaugural meeting of Delaware's overdose fatality review commission.
