SALISBURY, Md. - Veteran Abner Snell volunteers his days shuttling other veterans to and from medical appointments from Cambridge to Baltimore.  But these days he finds himself doing it wearing a bigger smile than he's had in years.

"Some people say I look good, I don't know," Snell said, laughing.

His new and improved smile comes courtesy of a new grass-roots effort called Veterans Smile Makeover, a joint effort between Dr. Stewart Perim of Peninsula Dental Center and American Legion Post #64. Through donated time and services, the program is meant to provide veterans with the extensive dental care they cannot afford themselves.  David Wharton with the American Legion says these are services not covered by the VA which he says only treats dental issues and injuries sustained in service.

"They don't do maintenance.  Primarily they work with veterans who are 100% disabled or had a facial injury of some type that would require dental maintenance," said Wharton.

Dr. Perim says in Snell's case the necessary work included full mouth extractions, grafting, bone supplementation, removal of cysts and extensive healing.  Once healed, Snell was fitted with a new set of dentures, also donated.

"I go by the mirror sometimes and I look at the guy in the mirror and I see a little more teeth," said Snell with a broad smile.

Now program organizers are hoping that more dental providers will get involved, more people will donate to the program and more veterans will be able to get back their smiles.
