Teen Struck by Car in Dover Dies in Hospital

Posted: Updated:

DOVER, Del.- A 15-year-old boy struck by a car last week in Dover has succumbed to his injuries.

Dover police said the incident happened shortly after 9 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 26, when two juveniles were crossing the northbound lanes of Route 13, just north of East Loockerman Street from the center median against the pedestrian crossing signal.  Northbound traffic had a green light at the time, according to police.

Investigators said that as the juveniles reached the far right travel lane of the northbound side of Route 13, one of them, described only as a 15-year-old boy, turned around and sprinted back toward the left most lane, possibly to pick up a dropped item, and ran directly into the path of a 2014 Kia Forte passenger car. The boy was transported by EMS to Bayhealth Kent General Hospital and was later airlifted to AI DuPont Children’s Hospital.  Police said that as a result of the injuries he sustained, the teen died on the morning of Friday, Oct. 28.

Police said that while the name of the boy is not being released at this time, his next of kin has been notified.

Nearly Half of July's Overdoses Were in Sussex County

The opioid epidemic continues to ravage the nation, including here in Sussex County where nearly half of the deaths from drug overdoses this month are from Delaware's southern-most county.

The recent spike has prompted a state warning specifically targeted at heroin users. According to the release, the uptick may be the result of heroin being laced with fentanyl, a synthetic opioid much more powerful than most drugs.
