West Dover Connector Named After POWs and Missing Service Members

Posted: Updated:

KENT COUNTY, Del. -- A major road project providing direct access to the western portion of Dover and parts of Kent County will bear a new name honoring service members who went missing in combat or were taken prisoner.

State transportation officials announced on Monday that the West Dover Connector project has been named the "POW-MIA Parkway," which pays tribute to prisoners of war and service members who are missing in action. The 3.2-mile road runs from U.S. 13 near Brecknock Park in Camden to SR 13.

Paul Davis with the Delaware State Council of Vietnam Veterans of America said the new name was an appropriate tribute to the soldiers who were captured in conflicts.

"Being a POW, the facts are the facts, many of them are tortured. They go through terrible times. They, they give so much to our country," he said.

The new name also reflects the parkway's closeness to Dover Air Force Base and all the military service members stationed there.

"Really what it does is underscore the fact that we will not, in Delaware, forget, and that means the world to all of us in uniform," he said.

Jim Doyle, a resident of the nearby Rodney Village community, said he is excited for the road's completion next year.

"U.S. Route 13 is nuts [during] rush hour. You could be backed up from Webbs Lane all the way into Camden so I think that'll be good," he said.

The project is set for completion by July 2017. Jonathan Ledger, a construction manager with the Delaware Department of Transportation, expects the parkway to reduce the number of vehicles cutting through Downtown Dover and the state capitol grounds to get to the western portion of the city.

"This will obviously be a much smoother connection for not only vehicles but bikes and pedestrians with the shared use facilities that we have," he said.

By 2035, DelDOT says 20,000 trips by cars and trucks could happen on the parkway everyday.
