SNOW HILL, Md.- Relief may soon be on its way for drivers in Worcester County traveling into Snow Hill. The Maryland State Highway Administration said Tuesday the section of Snow Hill Road near Nassawango Road, that's been closed due to flood damage should reopen by Thanksgiving, it all goes to plan.

It's been weeks of waiting, detours and a lot of inconvenience for some drivers trying to get into Snow Hill along Route 12. Construction at the washed out section of Route 12 has been underway for a few weeks to get that portion of roadway reopened according to state highway officials.

Dale Abbott, a bus driver for Worcester County Schools says it's been an inconvenience not having Snow Hill open and the detour dangerous.

"This is so much easier than doing down Millville Road, when people are flying down there and it's only supposed to be 35 m.p.h, with the bus there's no place to get over," Abbott said.

Donnie Drewer, with the Maryland State Highway Administration said they have worked with the County to make the detour less of a hassle during construction. Drivers are directed to take Millville Road and Old Furnace Road when trying to get in and out of Snow Hill in the meantime. Dale said she and other drivers are frustrated with the road closure because she said it could have been avoided.

"There has been a sinkhole with an orange cone sitting in it for over a year, they knew the sinkhole was there, so I think it should have been taken care of, and now with the storm they have to take care of it," Abbott said.

Drewer said repairs were scheduled for that damaged section of Route 12, but not until October 2017. While some drivers expressed frustration, neighbor Lowell Eby said he's adjusted to the detour, but looks forward to the road reopening soon.

"We just used Millville Road to go into Snow Hill and of course to Salisbury it doesn't affect us. It's a little inconvenient, but not that much," Eby said.

State Highway official's said the cost of repairs to the damaged section of Route 12 is estimated at $1 million.
