Early Voting Draws Big Numbers On Eastern Shore

Posted: Updated:

SALISBURY, Md. - Voters in Maryland and around the Eastern Shore have been flocking to the polls ever since early voting opened one week ago.  And with only hours to go until the polls close before opening again on Election Day, voters continued to line up to make their voices heard.

"We're on target to hit our goal of 10,000 voters for early voting and that means 10,000 fewer people standing in line on November 8th," said Anthony Gutierrez, Election Director for Wicomico County.

At the Wicomico County Youth and Civic Center Thursday morning, people were lining up to take full advantage of the early voting option.

"I had a last minute work schedule change so it was easy to get in and this just worked out for me," said Robert Greer of Salisbury.

"Because the day of the election I have some other stuff and this just worked into my schedule," said Robert Kreiter of Parsonsburg.  "I think a lot of people are that way."

Elections officials from around the area report early voter turnout far exceeding that seen in 2012.  In Worcester County, 6,323 voters had cast their ballot by Thursday afternoon.  In Dorchester County the number of voters came in at 3,238 and in Somerset County  2,368 voters cast an early ballot.  Maryland election officials say, on average, early voting is up 18 percent over 2012.  Elections officials on the Eastern Shore report similar increases.

Early voting locations close at 8 p.m. Thursday around the state.
