3rd Annual Latino Summit Held in Georgetown

Posted: Updated:

GEORGETOWN, Del. - Over 350 people attended the 3rd annual Latino Summit today, held at DelTech.

The theme of the summit was "Connecting through Civic Engagement," with an emphasis on encouraging young Latinos to be future leaders. WBOC spoke to many teenagers who attended the summit, who said they learned valuable leadership skills.

"I learned that there's always hope. Never stop trying," said Elena Augustin, who goes to Sussex Central High School. "Don't stop. Keep moving."

The summit was put on by the Delaware Hispanic Commission, an organization created by Governor Jack Markell in 2011. Maria Matos is on that commission, and says events like these can impact real change.

"We can come together as one voice instead of five, six, seven, eight, twelve different voices," she said. "Think of a funnel--you put that voice in a funnel and it comes out and people hear you."

The summit included panel discussions on health and education, along with an expo and networking opportunities. Rosalinda Leon goes to Cape Henlopen High School. She says she learned how to be a leader in her community.

"I learned how to help people," she said.

More information on the summit can be found here.
