Democrats Win Big in Delaware Students' Mock Election

Posted: Updated:

DOVER, Del. -- Democratic candidates for president, vice president, and many statewide offices were the winners in the mock election from Delaware students.

The results were announced during an event at Legislative Hall in Dover and were comprised of ballots cast over three days by students in more than 180 schools across Delaware.

In the mock election, Democrat Hillary Clinton defeated Republican Donald Trump with 28,264 votes to his 15,124.

Congressman John Carney defeated State Sen. Colin Bonini in the governor's race, 21,606 to 14,458 and Lisa Blunt Rochester beat Hans Reigle by a 21,832 to 13,591 margin.

Democrats Bethany Hall-Long and Trinidad Navarro won their respective races for lieutenant governor and insurance commissioner.

Grace Collins, a senior at Caesar Rodney High School, said she was excited to participate in the mock vote since she is 17 years old and won't be able to cast a ballot on Tuesday.

When it comes to the current political climate and discourse, Collins said young people offer a perspective that adults and politicians should listen to.

"The young people especially have the ability to bring the election back to the level that it needs to be on, the level of respect we have for each other as Americans. That way we can all participate and be happy with the results."
