Kent County WWII Veteran To Turn 93

Posted: Updated:

As Gene Jensen of Woodside flips through his Geneaology book through photos of family and personal history, it's clear he's seen a lot.

Jensen is about to turn 93 years old. He served with the Army Air Corps and retired from the U.S. Air Force, fighting in three wars: World War II; Korea; and Vietnam.

His memory isn't as sharp as it used to be but he remembers a lot, including the horror of Nazi concentration camps.

"A lot of people tell me they don't want to hear it. But it's the truth and you should hear it," he said.

Jensen's home is dotted with memorabilia from his service and other activities he's done over the years. He was also a coin collector and is a car enthusiast, having built a two-story garage in his backyard.

Aside from his service, one of the things Jensen said he's most proud of is building his own home, where's he's lived for more than four decades.

Steve Sinclair helps Jensen with his yard, doing things like clearing these leaves. He's one of the only visitors Jensen, a widower, gets nowadays but says the veteran does a pretty good job of holding his own.

"He gets up and goes and takes care of himself and once and a while he'll let me help him," he said.

Jensen doesn't really leave his house, but he still pays a lot of attention to the outside world. Without naming names, he said today's leaders are leading the country down the wrong road and could learn a little from military discipline.

Looking back on his own service and to today's soldiers, Jensen says they'll always have his support.

"They follow instructions well," he said. "I'll be behind them all the time."
