Posted: Updated:

BERLIN, Md.- Authorities say a Dover, Del. man has been charged with driving under the influence after the SUV he was driving crashed and overturned Sunday in Worcester County.

The Worcester County Sheriff's Office said the incident happened shortly after 5:30 p.m. at South Point Road at Bay Landing Drive in Berlin.

According to the Sheriff's Office, when a deputy arrived on the crash scene, he observed 27-year-old Matthew Ulyssea Hill sitting on the ground supported by another man.  The deputy also observed a silver Saturn Vue upside down in the woods approximately 10 feet from the roadway. Investigators said that when the deputy spoke to Hill, he could smell an odor of an alcoholic beverage. The deputy also observed an open container in the SUV, according to the Sheriff's Office. Hill refused treatment from EMS, investigators said.

Hill fared poorly on field sobriety tests and was placed under arrest, according to the Sheriff's Office, which noted that he did not have a valid driver’s license in any state.

Authorities said that in addition to being charged with DWI, Hill was also wanted on an outstanding bench warrant. He was later released on his own recognizance.
