BERLIN, Md.- As wreaths are hung and light posts are decorated, a store on Main Street in Berlin has kicked off its annual holiday tradition: a coat drive for local children.

Victorian Charm co-owner Steve Frene said he and his wife came up with the idea years ago when their daughter-in-law who taught at a local school told them about children who couldn't afford winter coats and consequently were unable to play outdoors during cold weather.

"That kind of touched us," said Frene. "Berlin's just a great little community with people working together and sharing and we just want to make sure everyone in the community is taken care of. However, we can help we want to do it."

During this year's drive, anyone who donates a new child's coat will be given a free tote bag created by the Berlin Main Street program.  The bag features a map of the Berlin area and many businesses.

The coat drive began Nov. 5 and runs through Nov. 23.  However Frene says if donations come in later, he will make sure they get to where they are needed.  Coats can be dropped off at Victorian Charm during regular business hours.

DROP-OFF HOURS:

Monday-Thursday, Saturday  10 a.m.-5 p.m.

Friday  10 a.m.-8 p.m.

Sunday  11 a.m.-5 p.m.
