Kenton Road Could Be Widened

Posted: Updated:

A 1.2-mile stretch of road in Kent County, Delaware that runs through residential areas may be expanded to two lanes in both directions in the coming years.

DelDOT is planning to upgrade a section of Kenton Road with bike lanes and sidewalks, though the agency is considering adding a lane in both direction. Ground might not be broken for years on the project, though the agency presented its options to the public at a recent workshop.

Roy Caldwell, who lives along Kenton Road, said the one-lane thoroughfare can be very congested at times and regularly sees crashes on it.

"There's a lot of accidents every day, especially in front of my yard. I actually had an accident in my yard. There's no sidewalks to walk on so people take walks. People walk through my yard all the time," he said.

The work is still in the very early stages, according to Jim Satterfield with DelDOT. He said there is no firm timetable and work may not begin for years. He noted that if the agency decides to pursue for the road-widening project, the plan would likely be presented to the public in the spring.

Although the area had been targeted for pedestrian and bicycle improvements, Satterfield said the road-widening project is being considered because it would more closely match anticipated growth in the area.

Roger Wolfgang, a volunteer firefighter, lives in a home near Kenton Road. He said the road needs to be widened, since traffic can back up on side roads and it is sometimes difficult to get fire trucks to get out of the firehouse on Kenton Road.

"We have a tough time getting out sometimes. People will not stop, I mean you come out and the lights and the siren and they just drive by like today, today's another day."

Regardless if the road is widened or not, DelDOT wants to install sidewalks and adequate bike lanes. Caldwell is happy to hear that, since there are of new homes being built in the area.

"It's hectic sometimes it takes me 10, 12 minutes to get out of my driveway to go to work." he said. "It can be crazy."
