UPDATE: Indian River School District Referendum Fails by 20 Votes

Posted: Updated:

SUSSEX COUNTY, Del. - The Indian River School District now says Tuesday night's referendum failed by only twenty votes.

Spokesperson Dave Maull says according to the Department of Elections, the final vote total was 3,321 for and 3,341 against, therefore creating a 20-vote margin. Maull says these results will be officially certified by the department next week.

Sarah Wingate of Georgetown said she voted against the referendum for two reasons: cost and the recent audit.

"It's not necessarily a vote against the children. I just think that right now with the financial hardships on everyone, it would be a lot," she said, referring to the $95 property tax increase the referendum would have caused. "And the news that just came out about the school district-- I think they need to clear some of that up publicly before we move forward on a referendum."

Indian River School District Superintendent Susan Bunting released a statement after the results came in.

"While disappointed, we respect the wishes of our public and the workings of the democratic process," she said. "In the coming weeks, we will go back to the drawing board to re-evaluate our needs and formulate strategies to accommodate our rapid growth in student enrollment."

The next step is a November 28th board meeting. Former board member Everett Moore says he thinks the audit will be a topic of discussion for them.

"It's a wake up call for the board," he told WBOC. "They understand that there's some challenges and some things that need cleaning up."

The district has an option to put the referendum back up for a vote early next year.

The Humble House has some neighbors like Michael Engels more than just worried.

"The last thing I want to do is to find out there's a halfway house within walking distance from where my children will be playing and living," Engels said.

Upset with what's just down the street, Engels says he's considering moving.
