Dover Businesses Looking Forward to Small Business Saturday

Posted: Updated:

With attention shifting from Black Friday to Small Business Saturday, store owners in Downtown Dover said they're looking forward to a weekend that will help boost sales as the holiday shopping season begins.

Started in 2010, Small Business Saturday is wedged between Black Friday and Cyber Monday. It focuses on commerce at locally-owned businesses in communities across the country.

Suds & Company co-owner Kim Aigle said Black Friday was relatively quiet with modest foot traffic along Loockerman Street but anticipated the promotion of Small Business Saturday would help drive sales.

"They may be saving up their dollars and their dimes for Saturday, so we're looking forward to that trickle down," she said.

Even with periodic waves of business on Friday, Gary Knox, owner of Forney's Too, said downtown shops often have a personal touch that might not be found at a mall or big box store.

"One of our other expressions is: 'The owner is home.' I'm gonna be here, I'm gonna look you in the eye, I'm gonna wait on you and I get a kick out of helping you give. I think they pick up on that," he said.

Tammy McCloskey of Harrington visited Bel's Boutique to do some shopping with her niece on Friday. She said it was worth driving to Dover's downtown area to be able to support a locally-owned business.

"They know what you really want to buy and they want to find it for you," she said. "They want to know what the customer is looking for and then they want to be that person who gets that for you."

Nearly Half of July's Overdoses Were in Sussex County

The opioid epidemic continues to ravage the nation, including here in Sussex County where nearly half of the deaths from drug overdoses this month are from Delaware's southern-most county.

The recent spike has prompted a state warning specifically targeted at heroin users. According to the release, the uptick may be the result of heroin being laced with fentanyl, a synthetic opioid much more powerful than most drugs.
