Number of Flu Cases Reaches 13 in Delaware

Posted: Updated:

DOVER, Del. -- State health officials on Monday said the number of lab-confirmed flu cases in Delaware this flu season has reached 13, a figure they reported was an uptick from last year but marked a relatively quiet season thus far.

Andrea Wojcik, a spokeswoman for the Delaware Division of Public Health, said the numbers also may not reflect flu cases where a sick person decides not to seek medical attention because they are not recorded. Immunization against the disease is typically recommended by medical professionals for most people older than 6 months old.

As the flu season develops, Erik Mabus, the pharmacist at Bayard Pharmacy, said he is still seeing people come in for flu shots, though there are many people with misconceptions about the vaccine.

"The reality of the flu vaccine is that it absolutely cannot cause you to get the flu. The virus is dead so there is zero percent chance of it causing the flu, regardless of what anyone will tell you," he said.

Jen Atkins, a teacher at Fifer Middle School in Kent County, said she needed to get a flu shot to protect herself and her students this season.

"I'm around kids all the time. It's colder out, the germs are just widespread during this time of the year," she said.

Still, some are skeptical of the vaccination. Tyree Taylor of Dover said he doesn't plan on getting one this year.

"I really don't get sick too often, so I don't think that I should get it," he said. "I don't know what's in it."
