SALISBURY, Md.- The US 13 Salisbury Bypass bridges project is moving along on-schedule, the Maryland State Highway Administration said Tuesday.

According to SHA, thanks in part to a much-needed dry and mild fall, crews completed the bridge deck latex overlays on the northbound bridges at US 50, MD 346 and the Norfolk-Southern Railroad.  Work has now shifted to replacement of the end sections on these bridges.

SHA said demolition of an end section at the MD 346 overpass is underway. Once the sections are removed there, the demolition crew will move down to the US 50 overpass while other crews begin constructing the new MD 346 end sections – pouring new abutments, setting steel beams, forming and pouring the new deck and parapet walls.

According to SHA, dry weather is essential as necessary concrete work must happen through the winter to keep the project on schedule. SHA said it is prepared to contain and heat the work areas and use concrete curing blankets if needed.

SHA said the goal is to finish the end sections by May in order to restore normal traffic flow north of US 50 in time for beach season when crews will focus their work south of US 50 - at Mt. Hermon Road and Parker Pond. SHA said that by next October it should be ready to shift back into bi-directional mode north of US 50 for work on the inner loop (southbound) bridges.
