Cape Henlopen High School Wellness Center Considers Offering Contraceptives, HIV Testing

Posted: Updated:

LEWES, Del. - The Wellness Center at Cape Henlopen High School may expand its services next year.

According to a presentation given to the school board by Wellness Center nurse Joann K. Economos, parents and students are currently requesting the center offer HIV Testing and contraceptives.

The Wellness Center--operated in partnership with Beebe Healthcare and Delaware Division of Public Health--currently offers services including sports physicals, immunizations and STI & pregnancy tests.

The school board is just discussing the expanded services at the moment. Issues to be  determined include parental consent. Economos' presentation says they'll have the consent of the parent with reproductive health counseling, condoms, oral contraceptives, reversible contraceptives (single rod implant placed in arm), and the Depo-Provera shot.

Summer Mistretta has a freshman at Cape Henlopen High School.

"I think I would want to know if my kids were getting contraceptives. I would like to be included on that," she says. "But bottom line is I think I'd want my kids to be protected either way."

Father William Cocco with St Edmonds Catholic Church in Rehoboth says he thinks it would send the wrong message

"I'm not naive to say without doing this they're not going to have sex," he says. "But at that age, the responsibility that comes with that-- our society is not telling kids about that."

According to the presentation, the services are necessary at Cape Henlopen High School due to its location.

"The closest state facility that provides reproductive healthcare is located in Georgetown," Economos writes in the presentation. "Access to transportation is an issue. There are evening hours only one day a week."

Economos says the expanded services would be covered under federal funds. The services could start as early as next year if approved.

Economos' presentation to the school board can be found here
