DelDOT Discusses Extending Junction & Breakwater Trail

Posted: Updated:

REHOBOTH BEACH, Del. - A popular biking trail in Delaware may soon get a little bigger.

DelDOT is proposing to extend the existing Junction and Breakwater Trail into Rehoboth Beach, along Rehoboth Avenue around Grove Park to Henlopen Avenue.

DelDOT suggests creating a  new 10-foot wide pedestrian pathway on the existing roads in addition to adding crosswalks and curb ramps.

"This will provide some protection and additional safety," says Anthony Aglio, a Planning Supervisor with DelDOT. "It will be a lot wider so bikes and pedestrians can use the space at the same time rather than a four foot sidewalk or a five foot bike lane."

Aglio says they hope that construction can take place in the Spring of 2018. He says the project helps improve an increasingly popular path.

"There's about 10,000 people per month who use the trail, a lot of which is on the outbound side," he says. "So 90% of the non-motorized traffic is on the side of the road we're trying to put the trail on."

DelDOT held a public workshop at the Rehoboth Beach Volunteer Fire Company today where people could ask questions or offer feedback. DelDOT says people can also mail comments to DelDOT Community Relations, P.O. Box 778, Dover, DE 19903 or sent via email to dotpr@state.de.us.
