CAMBRIDGE, Md.- Dorchester County Public Schools Superintendent Henry V. Wagner Jr. on Thursday announced he is retiring.

Wagner said in a public statement that he was retiring effective July 1, 2017, because of "compelling personal, family and professional considerations." He also said it is time for him to "embark upon the next enterprises" of his life and career.

Wagner said he believed much has been accomplished for the children of Dorchester County over the last 10 years, noting that achievement, scholarship and graduation rates are at historically high levels.

"During the remaining months of my tenure, I will continue to work with the Board of Education of Dorchester County to promote the best possible decisions on behalf of our children," Wagner said. "I am also committed to effecting the smoothest possible transition to the next superintendent's administration as a critical final aspect of my legacy."
