Sussex County Salvation Army Receives Unique Donation

Posted: Updated:

REHOBOTH BEACH, Del. - Salvation Army red kettles get a lot of coins...but not necessarily ones like two recently donated in Rehoboth Beach.

A woman put two antique coins--in wrappers with apparent certificates of authenticity-- into the red kettle station at the Kmart on Coastal Highway. Dave Todd with the Salvation Army says that woman then called him.

"She said they're worth some money, they're antique brass coins, and I said, 'Well how do you know that?'," he recalled. "And she said, 'Maybe I'm the one that dropped them.'"

She told Todd they were worth $800. He thinks she called so he knew the coins weren't just a fluke donation.

"I think she called and told me this because we get a lot of Canadian coins and we put them in the junk drawer," Todd said.

Oscar Rolon, an officer with the Sussex County Salvation Army said they will get them appraised in the new year. But regardless of their worth, they appreciate the sentiment.

"I am so happy somebody decided to donate this to us. It's trusting their values to Salvation Army," he said." I don't know the amount, I'm not looking for a certain value, we're just going to be happy with it."

Rolon says they've already raised $80,000 in donations and hope to get to $124,000. Todd is optimistic that as Christmas draws closer, people will give just like the Salvation Army's anonymous guardian angel.

"If she was doing this for herself, she would have told me her name," he said. "This time of year brings out the best in people. It truly does."
