EDEN, Md.- A two-alarm fire left the main building of the Wicomico Yacht Club in Eden in ruins late Friday afternoon.

According to the Maryland State Fire Marshal's Office, the fire caused an estimated $300,000 in damage to the structure and another $200,000 to its contents.

Wicomico Yacht Club officials said the interior of the building was destroyed but none of the roughly 35 boats were damaged in the fire, which authorities said took 50 firefighters from seven fire companies approximately 90 minutes to get under control.

Deputy State Fire Marshals said the fire started in the kitchen and was caused by a malfunctioning propane-fueled furnace. There were no reported injuries.

Salisbury Deputy Fire Chief Darrin Scott said the call was received at around 3 p.m. and seven fire companies and nearly 50 firefighters total responded to the scene.

Richard Carey, the yacht club's longest running member and past commodore, said the fire is devastating, and the timing is ironic.

"This Saturday night we were having our annual Christmas party and everybody was going to bring something for the homeless," he told WBOC. "Now it looks like the Wicomico Yacht Club is homeless for a while."

Carey said the club has around 320 members.

Current Vice Commodore Peter Hanulak says the club will recover.

"We do a lot of activities on a monthly basis," he said. "It's a shame that this happened but we'll rebuild it. We'll be back."

Investigators said the building was not equipped with a fire alarm or sprinkler.
