DOVER, Del. -- Early results from a digital survey conducted by the Kent County Levy Court show that many people who live in the county are concerned about long-term issues with congestion on area roadways and overdevelopment that could threaten the area's rural charm.

Sarah Keifer, the county's planning director, said more than 500 survey responses had been collected to help create the county's Comprehensive Development Plan, a document crafted every 10 years that guides land use and development in the area. The survey is expected to be completed by the end of the year.

Among the biggest concerns was managing development outside of growth zones, protecting rural areas, and creation of employment opportunities.

"People want to see development, but they also want to keep their rural character and frankly, farmers want to keep farming," she said.

Keifer said a follow up survey will likely be conducted next year with additional questions. She said it's important for as many county residents as possible to comment on it because the comprehensive development plan will affect land use for years to come.
