SALISBURY, Md.- Recycling usually takes a second, but for people who use the drop-off centers around Wicomico County, overflow issues are turning a simple task into a headache. Users of the recycling centers are frustrated.

"I've come up here before and it's been overflowing like this too. They need to put some more places around to recycle stuff," said Salisbury resident Charlie Williams.

The Wicomico Department of Public Works said it is aware of the issues and is currently working to solve them.

The county said the overflow is partially caused by too many people dumping off at one time.

However, residents and the DPW also pointed to the closing of the Fruitland recycling center last spring as a reason for the overflow.

"I used to go to Fruitland, but they closed that one for some reason, so now when I run up to the mall or on the north end of town, I can just stop here and dump off," said Williams.

The DPW said the county is currently looking for a replacement location and say bins are swapped from the recycling centers twice a week to curb any overflowing.

Officials also said the centers are monitored three days a week for any issues.

Director of the Department of Public Works Dallas Baker said the eight centers around the county will be updated for efficiency and to prevent any illegal dumping of non-recyclables.

"We're putting in lights in all these locations. We're going to be installing cameras in the location, cleaning up appearance, adding fences that type of thing," said Baker.

The DPW said anyone who spots any issues at the drop-off recycling centers can contact the department at 410-548-4872.
