Fourth of July Celebration in Lewes

Posted: Updated:

LEWES. Del.- Whether it's eating lots of hot dogs, spending time with family and friends, or playing lots of games, the people of Lewes celebrated America's birthday with an old-fashioned July 4th celebration. In the streets of Sussex County, neighbors participated in the "Old Fashioned Fourth of July Celebration."

A celebration with lots of games--including milk chugging, egg tosses, and a pie-eating contest. The celebration in Lewes has been going on for for over 20 years and community members hope organizers keep the tradition alive.

During the excitement, children of all ages reflected on what Independence Day means to them.

"To me, the fourth of July is the day we got our independence and we became a free country and I think it's all important to me," says Norah Black who lives in Lewes.

City officials, including the mayor of Lewes participated in Tuesday's celebration, along with Delaware Gov. John Carney.
