Senator Carper Tours Bayhealth Sussex Health Campus in Milford

MILFORD, Del.- Major progress is being made on the new Bayhealth Sussex Campus in Milford.

On Tuesday, Bayhealth President and CEO Terry Murphy held a tour of the hospital's construction site, of which the last steel beam will be put in place on Tuesday. Murphy pointed out how each floor of the 440,000-square-foot hospital will have its own purpose and every room is private. He said keeping Bayhealth in Milford was important.

"We have a lot of history within the city of Milford and although this is going to provide access to a greater portion of all of Sussex County, we thought it was important to place it in the city of Milford and made sure that it was."

The current Clarke campus will be turned into a nursing home when the new hospital opens in January 2019. On the tour Murphy showed how the hospital's outer layer is being installed.

U.S. Sen. Tom Carper, who participated in Monday's tour, remarked on how important the hospital's location is in a rural area, saying the recent 4th of July holiday reminded him of that.

"We actually read the Declaration of Independence," he says. "It starts with [...] life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. It's hard to have life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness without access to quality health care."

The campus will also have a 100,000-square-foot children's specialty health system, a level of pediatric care that people currently must drive to Wilmington to get, Murphy says. Murphy says the area's growing senior population made a Sussex campus important as well.

"It's development for this part of the state that's growing, getting older and we look to be the provider of healthcare services to this important population for generations," he says.

Bayhealth is hosting a "Topping Out" ceremony on Tuesday where the final beam of the hospital will be installed.
