Delay in Reconstruction of Hearns Pond Dam

SEAFORD, Del.- It's been over a year since the state of Delaware closed Hearns Pond to the public for reconstruction of the dam.

The dam at Hearns Pond was overtopped and damaged during a 2001 storm causing serious downstream flooding damage, according to the Delaware Department of Natural Resources Environmental Control.

DNREC and the Delaware Department of Transportation have partnered together to reconstruct the dam and neighbors couldn't be more excited for the pond to re-open.

"We're very excited about the new dam, it's a terrific improvement to our lifestyle here. We don't have to worry about flooding which is what we occasionally worried about in the past," says Sharon Dhondt who lives in Seaford.

With more than a $4 million budget, the dam will increase the capacity to allow the water in storm events to pass through, says George Pierce, a supervising engineer for DelDOT.

The dam was supposed to be completed this month, but due to severe weather, the date has been pushed back to August 5, according to DelDOT.
