GEORGETOWN, Del. (AP) - A Delaware church has removed an anti-LGBTQ sign following community protest.

The sign, which read "It's Adam and Eve not Steve" and was signed "God," was up at Providence United Methodist Church for a week before being removed Monday. Pastor Regina Reeves and former pastor Walter Reeves said in a release that the message was unauthorized and posted by an individual member of the church without pastoral or leadership knowledge.

The removal followed a July 2 letter from Georgetown resident Charles Mead-e to Peninsula-Delaware Conference of the United Methodist Church district superintendent Rev. Kyung-Hee Sa, in which he cited the United Methodist Church Book of Discipline, which prohibits LGBTQ discrimination.

The church says it will institute further steps to ensure future postings are approved.

Conservationists call it a "threatened historic place." The Phillips Packing House in Cambridge was built in the 1920s. At its peak, nearly 10,000 employees packed vegetables and shucked oysters inside its factory. But after closing in the 60's, the building and its two, towering smokestacks have sat untouched. But now, a new initiative aims to restore the Phillips Packing House as soon as this year.
