Salisbury Independent Volunteer Fire Co. 1 Hosts First Fundraiser

SALISBURY, Md. - It was a smoky start for Salisbury Independent Volunteer Fire Company One as volunteers hosted their first chicken barbecue fundraiser Friday afternoon on Snow Hill Road from 11 a.m to 4 p.m. Volunteers are currently raising money for new equipment.

The fundraiser took place after the independent fire company did not receive any funding from Wicomico County.

"We're not funded this year by the county. We're doing this on our own -- fundwise, as far as getting the financials together to get the company running again," Chief Cory Polidore said.

But the event wasn't just about flipping chicken and bringing in money. It was also about raising awareness in the community.

Some folks from Salisbury said the volunteer efforts should be supported despite the controversy surrounding the independent company's decision to break away from the county.

"They do great service as first providers to our community so this sounds like a great way for them to get started on their new enterprise," said Jeff Benner, who lives in Salisbury.

In other cases, the fundraiser helped people get a different side to the story.

"I am one who's been following it in the news and have not felt particularly sympathetic to the breakaway fire company, and so this may be a very good opportunity for them to educate me to hear their side of the story," said Madeleine Adams, who lives in Salisbury.

Polidore said a chance is all the fire company wants.

"We're here to show that we can do this, and if we have to prove that with our own funds then we'll do it with our own funds without any funding from the county. The assistance from the county would be appreciated, but as of right now, chicken barbecue it is."

Salisbury Independent Volunteer Fire Company One plans to host fundraisers every Friday and Saturday through October. Polidore said the company should be up and running by Sept. 15.
