LAUREL, Del.-  A California man was sentenced to 12 years in prison on charges stemming from a 2016 car accident in Sussex County.

In July 2016, Gonzalez was driving southbound on Route 13 in Laurel, reaching speeds in excess of 90 miles per hour, when he rear-ended another car, police said.

According to police, Gonzalez was driving under the influence of alcohol.

The car was forced off the road and caught fire, killing the driver, 42-year-old Douglas Baker, and severely injuring another passenger, WBOC previously reported.

Gonzalez, who had two prior DUIs from California, was sentenced to 12 years in prison, during which he must complete the KEY rehabilitation program. His prison sentence will be followed by two years of probation.
