SU Preps to Install Carillon Bells

SALISBURY, Md.- Salisbury University prepped to lift the 48 carillon bells into their bell tower Tuesday.

After a long wait the traditional carillon bells have finally arrived at Salisbury University.

Bells of all shapes and sizes ranging from 16 pounds all the way up to 5,000 pounds arrived on Tuesday.

It was a day that Jeff Downes didn't think he was going to see. "I'll be honest for a while we wondered...when? Cause it kept getting maybe a couple months down the road, then maybe a couple months. But, 12 months later we are excited they are here."

The majority of Tuesday was spent lifting the structure up into the tower that will hold the bells in place.

An intricate process that superintendent on the project, Rick Hanna, said is accomplished through teamwork and precision.

"We left a 6 foot by 6 foot hatch at the top of it that we are dropping the bells right down through the center when we were going through the design stage there wasn't really anything allowing us to get the bells in," Hanna said.

Hanna said they will begin lifting the 48 carillon bells into the tower Wednesday. He said the bells will go from hanging the heaviest bells on the bottom to the lightest bells on the top.

Hanna said the two heaviest bells were actually casted by the same British company that casted the Liberty Bell.

Hanna said the process could take up to three weeks to fully complete.
