Carillon Bells Begin Making Their Way into SU's Bell Tower

SALISBURY, Md.- The first of 48 carillon bells was installed in Salisbury University's bell tower on Wednesday.

The bells will be placed from heaviest to lightest, and the bell that was lifted Wednesday weighed nearly 5,000 pounds.

Caleb Harris has been out in the heat working on the project and said it's a job that he's excited to see come full circle.

"After two days I'll be glad to see this first bell get up there. I think everybody else out here will [too]," Harris said.

SU President Janet Dudley-Eshbach said watching the bells go into the tower, located in the university's Guerrieri Academic Commons, is a memory that will stay with the university forever.

"The crowning achievement is the carillon. There are fewer than 200 traditional carillons in the nation and to my knowledge in the State of Maryland...maybe two or three others but not at a college or a university," Dudley-Eshbach said.

After working all day, the crew only managed to get the one carillon into the tower Wednesday. That means they still have 47 more to go.

Project superintendent Rick Hanna said the project is expected to be completed after three weeks.
